We’re bringing you a two-session course for educators on shifting the dynamic in classrooms and schools to one that facilitates both student and teacher autonomy.

The course is structured in two 3-hour sessions. Each session should have applicable takeaways but the sessions will fit together into a cohesive message of education as a partnership between kids and adults. We work to address NYS Teaching Standards.

Re-imagining community in the classroom

Session 1 - Reimagining Community in Schools: Who are we + Why are we here?

We will explore our identities and the identities of our students and reflect on how we all show up in schools: what are the perceptions we have of each other and what are the realities we don't always see. We will use community circles to connect and reflect on participants' teaching journeys and their hard work as educators and community builders. We will explore our own personal Why and lay bare the essence of what schools are and what they could be. Together we will ask the question - what if schools were a place that students and educators want to be - and inquire about how we get there. Throughout we will incorporate our time with some of the fun and connection of camp!

Session 2 - Reimagining Schools: Empathy Choice and Trust

As we continue to play and learn together, we will discuss what happens when guidelines are taken away and traditional power structures reconfigured. We will explore radical empathy and dig into what gets in the way of empathy in many educational systems. We will learn about restorative and transformative justice and how these models can help us reframe school communities. We will wrap up our time by making concrete plans for how we can reimagine our educational spaces and how we can continue to support each other in the work.
